Hempstead is the birthplace of the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin, who once lived in the local 'Bluebell Inn'. William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of blood, is buried in the local 14th century church.

Opportunities to enjoy the rolling countryside on foot are plentiful or visit the many picturesque thatched villages such as Finchingfield, Thaxted, Clare and Arkesden.

It is an ideal location for visiting Audley End (8 miles) or National Trust properties in the area, such as, Melford Hall, Anglesey Abbey and Ickworth House, which are all within 40 minutes.

Cambridge, the Duxford War Museum and Newmarket are 30 mins away and the Essex Coast is within an hour's drive.
